Background

Project HOPE is a global health and humanitarian organization with over 60 years of experience supporting country-led health systems strengthening, quality improvement, and lifesaving service delivery across more than 25 countries. In Nigeria, Project HOPE works in close collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, State Ministries of Health, and other partners to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes through evidence-based, sustainable, and government-aligned interventions.

With funding support from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Project HOPE is implementing a targeted maternal health initiative focused on improving quality of care, strengthening provider competence, and enhancing health system readiness for priority maternal health services. The initiative emphasizes the prevention and management of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and strengthens facility-level practices through hands-on clinical mentorship, data-informed quality improvement, and integration within existing RMNCAEH platforms.

Position Summary

The Maternal Health Clinical Mentor will provide high-level clinical, technical, and mentorship support to health workers and facility teams to improve the quality, safety, and effectiveness of maternal health services. The role combines strong clinical expertise with structured mentorship, project management, and robust monitoring and evaluation competencies.

The Mentor will work closely with government counterparts, facility teams, and Project HOPE program staff to strengthen provider skills, reinforce adherence to national guidelines, support continuous quality improvement (QI), and ensure that maternal health interventions are implemented with fidelity and measurable impact.

Specific Responsibilities

Clinical Mentorship and Capacity Strengthening

1. Provide on-site and remote clinical mentorship to nurses, midwives, doctors, managers, and facility teams on priority maternal health interventions, with focus on quality antenatal care including ultrasound screening, and management, effective anemia and high blood pressure. And patient self care.
2. Support the translation of national maternal health guidelines and protocols into routine clinical practice through coaching of antenatal service provision teams on guideline adherence, and case reviews.
3. Identify clinical performance gaps and tailor mentorship plans to address individual and facility-level needs.
4. Support the use of job aids, clinical checklists, and standard operating procedures to improve quality and consistency of care.

Quality Improvement and Data Use

1. Support facility-based quality improvement processes, including plan–do–study–act (PDSA) cycles, tracking of high risk pregnancies including anemia and high blood pressure, maternal death surveillance and response (MDSR) action tracking, and clinical audits.
2. Work with facility teams to interpret routine service data, identify trends, and use data for decision-making and service improvement.
3. Collaborate with M&E staff to ensure accurate documentation, reporting, and use of maternal health indicators aligned with national systems (e.g., DHIS2).

Project Management and Implementation Support

1. Contribute to the development and execution of detailed mentorship and implementation plans aligned with project objectives and timelines.
2. Support coordination of training, mentorship visits, review meetings, and learning sessions with government and facility stakeholders.
3. Provide timely inputs into activity reports, mentorship summaries, and technical documentation for internal management and donor reporting.
4. Ensure activities are implemented in line with approved workplans, budgets, and donor requirements.

Stakeholder Engagement and Government Collaboration

1. Work closely with State and LGA health authorities, facility leadership, and professional bodies to ensure alignment with government priorities and ownership of mentorship processes.
2. Support integration of mentorship activities within existing government supervision and capacity-building structures.
3. Represent Project HOPE in technical meetings and field engagements as delegated.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning

1. Support the design and use of mentorship monitoring tools to track provider performance, skills acquisition, and service quality improvements.
2. Contribute to learning documentation, best practices, and adaptive management approaches to strengthen program effectiveness.
3. Support cross learning across Project HOPE projects in country.
4. Participate in periodic reviews, learning sessions, and program evaluations.

Required Qualifications

Education:

1. Registered Nurse/Midwife or Medical Doctor with valid professional licensure in Nigeria.
2. Bachelor’s degree required; postgraduate qualification in Public Health, Maternal Health, or a related field is an added advantage.

Professional Experience:

1. Minimum of 5 –7 years of progressive experience in maternal health service delivery, clinical training, or mentorship.
2. Demonstrated experience providing structured clinical mentorship and supportive supervision in low-resource or public-sector settings.
3. Strong understanding of Nigeria’s RMNCAEH policies, guidelines, and health system structures.
4. Proven experience in project management, including planning, coordination, and reporting.
5. Solid experience in monitoring and evaluation, data use for quality improvement, and familiarity with DHIS2 or similar platforms.
